Apple and Almond Baked Dessert

From Dorothy McNett's Recipes at www.dorothymcnett.com. This recipe features a sweet and sour taste with apples and almonds baked with a caramel vinegar syrup. I am featuring Andy Boy Cactus Pear Vinegar, by D'Arrigo Bros., Salinas, Ca.
Be prepared! The aroma of this baking will wake up the neighborhood, it is so fabulous.

3/4 cup unbleached all purpose flour
1/2 cup crystalline brown sugar (Sugar in the Raw)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch of red pepper flakes, or a dash of cayenne
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped unsalted almonds
1 1/2 cups (usually just one large) apple, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup milk or apple juice

3/4 cup crystalline brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste, or vanilla extract
3/4 cup Cactus Pear vinegar

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In batter bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, pepper and salt. Blend in the chopped almonds, apples and the milk or juice. Spread into a 1 1/2 quart casserole. In heavy bottomed saucepan combine the brown sugar, butter, vanilla and vinegar. Cook and stir over medium heat several minutes, or until sugar and butter are dissolved. This can be done in the microwave for 2-3 minutes, as well, using a glass or ceramic bowl. Either way, when sugar is dissolved and butter is melted, pour this hot syrup over the batter. Bake 40-50 minutes.
