Cherry Upside Down Cake

2 cups fresh cherries, pitted and cut in half
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 package yellow cake mix
2 eggs
1/2 cup water or orange juice

Combine cherries, butter, brown sugar, and cornstarch in a 9 inch round glass cake pan, or use a microwave baking mold, if you have one. Microwave on High 4 minutes. Stir to blend. Microwave another 1-2 minutes, to thicken slightly, Combine cake mix, eggs, and water or juice. Blend well, and pour over cherries. Elevate on microwave rack or trivet, and microwave on High 5-8 minutes, or until cake batter is dry on the top. If there are moist puddles on the top, put it back in for another minute. When done, invert onto serving platter. Garnish with whipped cream or ice cream.
