Yankee Doodle Macaroni

From Dorothy McNett's Recipe Book at www.dorothymcnett.com.

1 teaspoon olive oil
2 cloves garlic, sliced
1 large onion, chopped
1 cup sliced mushrooms, optional
1 pound lean ground beef
3 1/2 cups cooked tomatoes, or 1 #21/2 can
2-3 sprigs snipped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon Zip

1 pound cooked cavatappi or orecchiette pasta
bread crumbs
Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese grated

In a heavy bottomed skillet, sauté the onion, garlic, and mushrooms in the oil until limp and starting to brown. Add the meat and cook and stir to brown. Add the tomatoes, parsley, salt, pepper, and Zip. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, while you cook the pasta in boiling salted water. Drain the pasta and stir it into the sauce. Pile it into an oven- proof casserole. Top with bread crumbs and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. Broil for 3-5 minutes, or until the bread and cheese topping browns slightly.
